My internship position with Heskia-Hacmun Law Firm from May – June 2008 was a wonderful experience, which I would highly recommend for any law student, either from the United States or any other country.
Coming from the United States and my first year of law school in New York, I had no idea what to expect from an internship experience with Heskia-Hacmun in Tel-Aviv. From my first day in the office and throughout my internship period, the attorneys and staff truly made an attempt to incorporate me into their day-to-day activities. I was able to work with and form strong relationships with the Heskia-Hacmun team. During my short but highly valuable time at Heskia-Hacmun, I studied Israeli law, worked with contract editing and drafting, document translating (from Hebrew to English), casefile review, and other team projects as necessary. I was able to accompany attorneys to the Tel-Aviv magistrate and district courts for motion filing as well as sit in on Israeli graduate law school classes at Tel-Aviv University. As an overall result, I was able to gain critical insight into how an Israeli law firm functions in the Israeli legal environment.
Something that is unique about my internship at Heskia-Hacmun is that not only was I able to apply the legal doctrine I’ve gained from law school in a practical setting, but I was able to apply my knowledge in an Israeli law firm setting. This posed additional challenges such as interaction with the law in a different language and dealing with the law from an Israeli and International perspective. Heskia-Hacmun was extremely accommodating and went to great efforts to assist me with this transition.
One of the special benefits of interning at Heskia-Hacmun law firm is its location in the sub-tropical International city of Tel-Aviv. While I had the pleasure of working in the interesting and fast-paced environment of the Heskia Hacmun Office, I further had the pleasure of living in the beautiful and uniquely exquisite city that, like New York, is said to be the “city that never sleeps.” From enjoying the Tel-Avivian beach, cuisine, people, nightlife, and overall culture, the experience of living in Tel-Aviv’s exciting and vibrant atmosphere is one I appreciated very much.
I am thankful for the opportunity to have learned all that I have from my internship with Heskia-Hacmun Law Firm. From this experience, I have gained a greater comprehension of Israeli Law as well as its comparisons and distinctions to the American legal system and profession. I only hope that one day I will again have the opportunity to return and expand upon my legal professional experience in the State of Israel.
