Viviane Brockerhoff, Duesseldorf, Germany / July – September 2022

As part of my legal clerkship at the District Court of Düsseldorf, I spent 3 month, July 2022 – September 2022, at the law firm Heskia-Hacmun in Tel Aviv.

My tasks consisted mainly of working on the German-language cases that arose in the firm. The work included not only the assessment of legal issues and the preparation of legal opinions, but also the communication with the German or Israeli authorities and embassies as well as related errands. The latter were always a welcome change of work, during which I could explore many corners of the city.

I was also given an insight into the work on Israeli cases. For example, I was allowed to participate in a mediation hearing in an Israeli case. Although my lack of knowledge of Hebrew stood in the way of a comprehensive insight, everyone involved made a great effort to translate what was said, so that I was able to follow along at all times.
During my stay at Heskia-Hacmun there were three other trainees. This allowed us to share the work and enjoy a day off, but also have a lunch break together or enjoy a beer after work.
I particularly liked the familiar atmosphere in the office. You always found open doors and ears, whether for legal, cultural or private questions. This openness led to a very warm atmosphere, which I had rarely experienced before.

This family-like atmosphere was also evident beyond work. For example, we went to soccer games together, celebrated a beach summer party and learned to surf. In addition to work, we were also given enough free time to travel around Israel and get to know the country and its people. All in all, I had a wonderful time in Tel-Aviv, for which I can only thank the whole Heskia-Hacmun team. Thank you very much!
